Wall, South Dakota
Wall, South Dakota
This unique town grew from the vision of a pharmacist named Ted Hustead, who started the drug store back in 1931. He and his wife promoted the area by using billboards, free ice water, and 5 cent coffee. Today there are more billboards on your way to Wall, South Dakota than you can shake a nickel at! The place we stayed was within walking distance to this roadside attraction so we ventured there more than once.
Points of Interest:
1. Bike: We had a nice afternoon riding the bikes around Wall, taking photos of a few signs, and stopping in for "Free Water". We were one of the more than 2 million visitors a year to stop at the popular roadside attraction. Be sure and stop in at the "Wall Drug Museum" at the back of the store.
2. Hike: The Notch Trail in the Badlands National Park will challenge you at some points and reward you with plenty of wildlife to see along the way. Such a unique part of the world.
3. Night photography: The headlamps will certainly show you just how much dust is swirling in the air, but it also gives a unique look to your photos. Try painting the hills with your headlamp while the hubby takes the long exposure. (See sample below.) Amazing result!
Scenic Motorcycle Routes:
1. Just throw your leg over the bike and head out to the Badlands located just 7 miles from the entrance. You have your choice of paved or dirt roads, both well maintained. The landscape here appears to be from another world...
