Custer, South Dakota

We discovered on our journey that inspiration can be found along the way. Fort Welikit (pronounced Fort We-Like-It!) was a must stop according to a traveler we met in Idaho. As we pulled in with our 36 foot trailer through our 37 foot site we certainly found ourselves challenged by the number of trees, branches, and rocks! Once we got settled and the bikes unloaded, we found ourselves good for the week and enjoyed the park, the town, and the riding.

Be sure and ride through Custer and take a photo of the artfully painted Bison located throughout the town.

Points of Interest:

1. Custer State Park: Be sure and stop to feed the wild burros a carrot or two.

2. Hike Sylvan Lake: A short hike around the lake is a great opportunity for some interesting photos.

3. Disc Golf with the families we met while at the Welikit Campground. Only three holes, but enough to keep up the skills!

Sylvan Lake is a special place. Hike, bike, or swim!

Scenic Motorcycle Routes:

1. Iron Mountain Road as shown in the photo below: 17 Miles, 314 Curves, 14 Switchbacks, 3 Pigtails, 3 Tunnels, 2 Splits, and of course the 4 Presidents of Mount Rushmore. One amazing ride. So enjoyable we repeated it three times!

2. Ride through the town of Custer and see the artistic buffalo. We then headed into Custer State Park to view real buffalo. An truly awesome day.

3. Needles Highway from Sylvan Road. Ride past Sylvan Lake and enjoy the rock formations, curves, and views along the way. As we journeyed through the Needles Eye Tunnel we were happily delayed by the two Mountain Goats taking their time with a salt lick in the middle.
