Bayard, Nebraska

Bayard, Nebraska

We found the area of Nebraska to be surprisingly beautiful and the people incredibly gracious. This location was recommended by Terry and Terry of Van Life, that we met in Wall, SD. We so enjoyed the Settlers Crossing and the towns of Bayard and Scotts Bluff. Chimney Rock has been endowed with lighting that makes for a great photo op. If you are in the area be sure to stop in for a night or two and enjoy the highlights of this amazing region.

Points of Interest:

1. We enjoyed some night photography at Pioneer Crossing Campground as we tried to capture this unique landmark as it sits glowing in the background.

2. Bike the downtown of Bayard, Nebraska. We visited on a Saturday and got to enjoy live music and selling of wares at the local Harvest Fair. Fresh honey, local art, and music in the streets were all parts of this fun atmosphere. We were embraced by so many of the locals.

3. Hike: Courthouse, Jail House, and Chimney Rock were all landmarks on the Oregon Trail. When you got to Scotts Bluff you could travel North on the Mormon trail or continue West to seek your fortune.

Scenic Motorcycle Routes:

1. Chimney Rock to Scotts Bluff National Monument. Take Highway 26 to Minatare to see some smaller towns along the way.

2. From Scotts Bluff take Highway 71 to Highway 88 and stop in at Courthouse Rock and Jail House Rock.

3. Carhenge is a replica of England's Stonehenge located near the city of Alliance, Nebraska. Take the 385 from Bayard to Alliance. Most of the roads in this area are certainly more straight with limited bends, but the sights are well worth the ride!
