Amarillo, Texas

By now we have lost count of all the people that have given us suggestions for places to visit. One kind couple from Lubbock, Texas stands out. They encouraged us to visit Cap Rock and Palo Duro Canyon in Amarillo. We had never heard of the area but decided to try it. We found an RV site on the rim of the "Grand Canyon of Texas" and truly enjoyed this visit to the Amarillo area.

Points of Interest:

1. The Mid-America Air Museum in Liberal, Kansas is on the way from Nebraska. It one of the country's largest air museums and home to more than 100 aircraft, many of which you can explore in a hands-on fashion.

2. Hike: The Lighthouse Trail is the most rewarding of the trails in Palo Duro with the terrific views and diverse terrain. Be aware that the final mile may be challenging for some but worth the effort once you get to the top.

3. Bike: At your own risk! Stick to the main roads as the trails are wrought with goathead thorns and cacti and are hard on bike tires.

Scenic Motorcycle Routes:

1. Ride through Palo Duro Canyon for the smooth roads and the red rock views. Be sure to stop at the "Tarantula Crossings" as we did. These furry devils are plentiful in this environment!

2. Cadillac Ranch is a must stop for every tourist or artist. Your creation is guaranteed to last 10 minutes... or less!

3. The ride to Caprock Canyons State Park & Trail is the straightest loop you will ever take! The park itself is wonderful. We rode through the park and enjoyed the native bison heard. With more than 90 miles of hiking to choose from you will be pleased.  We chose the South Prong Trailhead and enjoyed the short hike in to the canyon.
