Riding the “Old Road” of Route 66
Riding the Old Highway of Route 66
Back track to Grants, NM and 26 miles of “rough road”...
What a day out there on the “Old Hwy 66”. Just one more name for our Old Mother Road as we take our two BMW’s and try to follow her path. It is not always easy to find where the road lies and where the new (or old) road begins. It can be a challenge.
Todays fun began at the Exit to Los Lunas and the nearly 26 miles of “rough road” to Mesita. Our end goal was really to get to the grants Uranium Mine Museum and check that out. We needed to get our stamp as well... of course! In short order we found ourselves on a section of road that was dirt, wash board, and then finally a long length of old rough road. I did find myself hitting bottom on the front suspension a few times just because of the ruts and holes along the way. Not to worry... this is what these bikes are made for. Besides, we got these fancy new tires just to ride the rougher roads.
Tonight and I am looking forward to checking my photos and the video from John’s and my Helmet cam! Too fun. We especially enjoyed taking photos of the Whiting Bros. sign and the Budville Trading Co. in Cubero, NM.
