Gallop, New Mexico
Today is loading day!
I think our little crew here in Gallop, New Mexico will be glad to have our final day in this area. It has been a challenge with the winds, our arrival day being the most brutal of days.
We arrived a day early to this RV location with the winds blowing 30-50 miles an hour and gusts up to 75 miles an hour. I am pretty sure it was one of those gusts and my bad timing that I opened the GMC truck door and the wind nearly pulled the door off of the hinges! I wished I would have been just a bit slower in opening or heading in to the wind to avoid the nearly $3000 in damages. As it is, we found a very gracious and helpful person at Rico GMC auto body and repair. Johnny is getting us straightened out and at least able to continue on our travels. He has been a godsend. The final repairs will likely take place in Missouri of all places. We have never been there but it will be “home” for at least a month. Fingers crossed it all goes well.
We have continued this leg of the journey with Scott and Genevieve. We have taken the opportunities to hike, bike, and ride and have enjoyed the area as we sort through the challenges we face with wind damage to the truck.
Points of Interest:
Bike: Gallop is filled murals. The town proudly displays the history here so a bike ride through the downtown is worth several stops for photo opportunities.
Hike: Red Rock Park is a fantastic place to stretch the legs and enjoy looking back towards Gallop.
Scenic Motorcycle Routes:
Our Route 66 ride covered Holbrook, Arizona to Albuquerque, New Mexico! One stop and two rides out and back to be covered in the “Leg 5” of our journey from Santa Monica to Chicago. Be sure and stay tuned for that story next.
Mesa Verde National Park: Our stay in New Mexico would not be complete without trying to get to Mesa Verde National Park. We set out early in order to make this 350 mile day and it was so worth the effort. The roads in this national park let’s you ride through and stop along the locations for a quick photo and then move on. The ancestral cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde are some of the most well preserved in all of North America. This alone makes it a worthwhile visit.
