Leg 4: Williams to Winslow

Leg 4: GS II - Leg Four

Williams to Winslow

“Take it Easy, Don’t Let the Sound of Your Own Wheels Drive you Crazy...”

The winds of Williams had been relentless so the timing of the straight and open road to Winslow would be critical. The Monday after Easter will grant us a reprieve... we thought. What this section of “The Mother Road” lacks in turns, it makes up for with a twist! Our friends Scott and Genevieve have joined us on this part of our journey from Williams to Amarillo, and we could not be more excited. Having met them in Glacier Park last year this will be the fifth time our paths have crossed and we have enjoyed a dozen rides and 1000 plus miles already.

With an 8:00 A.M. start we decided to push hard for an out and back that will register most all of our stops on the return. Joseph City lies 107 miles ahead and firmly in our sights. First stop: Twin Arrows. What was once a must see fuel stop, because of the the distinct Giant Twin Arrows piercing the earth, it has now been replaced by a casino bearing the same name just across the Interstate. With one arrow quivered to the ground, we posed for some fun photos with it’s still standing sibling.

Joseph City is our turnaround for this leg, Historical marker logged, we now head to Jack Rabbit! “Here It Is” signs dot the landscape on the route from Midway, Texas to Flagstaff, Arizona so a visit was required. After our crew has sufficiently admired the over-sized hare, we prepare for a more somber stop:  The 9-11 Remembrance Garden in Winslow . This memorial was constructed using twisted beams from the World Trade Center and is as moving as one would expect... located thousands of miles away in hopes that we will never forget.

We point our motorcycles towards a certain “corner” in the center of Winslow, in hopes to “loosen our load and take it easy.”  We are informed that out friends had been to Winslow but due to circumstances had never “stood on the corner.” Done. Check.

We know that these are the stops that make for great memories.

A blustery ride back to Flagstaff  now lies ahead. Strong winds and 80 mph can take a toll, but we got this. We make it to “Flag” winding our way through the center of town and admiring the unique history and architecture. Collins Irish Pub is the “Linner” stop before heading back to Williams.

Having been a full day on the road it is now time to:

“Take it Easy, Don’t Let the Sound of Your Own Wheels Drive you Crazy...”

Thanks for reading!

Travel safe and we will see you out on “The Mother Road.”
