Savannah, Georgia… Part II

Skidaway Island hike!

Savannah, Georgia Part II

Season III - Chapter 9

The U.P. and Heading Down

“The upside of heading down... and other stranger things.”

With a nod to the Netflix Series: “Stranger Things,” our Season III is building to a climax. Much like the show itself, it is full of interesting twists...

Our final week in Georgia begins in South Carolina. With E-bikes secured in the Denali, we head to Hilton Head... (Try saying that three times real fast!) 😂  This is the shoulder season for this tourist hot spot, so parking is a breeze, and so was riding on the beach... breezy that is.  After several miles of riding into a strong headwind we decide to turn inland. The path off the public beach turns out to be a private resort community. Rather than risk arrest for trespassing, some kind residents direct us to an exit. Somewhere between the beach and freedom, Caroline tears a tube, one that a patch cannot repair... RIDE OVER... time to Head Home from Hilton Head. (Couldn’t resist.) 🤣

The following day was ideal to plan our holiday with our son and squeeze in a bit of adventure too. We respectfully pass through the Bonaventure Cemetery on our way to East River Street and it’s ballast and cobblestone assembled path, as old as the Lowcountry itself.

Caroline: “We did it!”

John: “I don’t recommend it...”

Caroline: “We did it!” 😉

Our last blast on the motorbikes needed to be exciting, and it was. Jarring and memorable!

This is our third Thanksgiving on the road. It begins with picking up our son from the airport and taking Duncan to Skidaway Island to stretch his legs.  We take in the live oaks, palms, and Spanish Moss first hand, it is an extrordinary experience. We love this time of year as it provides an opportunity for gratitude... we have so much to be thankful for!

Friday we receive our best education of this areas “other” side: the upside down from it’s spokesperson: Dawn, of Savannah’s Dead. She will be our historical and spiritual tour guide through the Bonaventure Cemetery. Every image you have of a mysterious graveyard is embodied here. Dawn  takes us on a journey through this former plantation, her baritone voice tremors as she regales us with folklore, how the deceased were prepared, and death bells! 🔔 Our tour concludes with an acapella  performance of Johnny Mercer’s greatest hits, sung by Dawn herself, on top of the family’s final resting place.  🎵🎶🎵

As we leave the the dead behind and return to the living, the three of us enjoy wandering around Savannah’s many squares followed by an outdoor brunch at Collins Quarter Cafe.

Our month in the lowcountry began on “All Hallows’ Eve” and ended in an iconic cemetery along the Wilmington River. Every moment in between was filled with unique, enlightening, and gratifying experiences.  We are now loaded and heading to our final stop of this season... the white sand beaches of Florida await!

“The upside of heading down... and other stranger things.”

Travel safe and we will see you on the road!
